Charting New Horizons: A Research Internship at Carleton University

Raj Burad, a fourth-year B.Tech ECE student from the Institute of Engineering & Technology at JKLU, recently completed a 12-week fully-funded research internship at Carleton University in Canada.

His participation in this prestigious international program was facilitated by the Mitacs Globalink Research Award Internship Program, which attracts top students globally to collaborate on research projects under the guidance of distinguished Canadian faculty.

While at Carleton, Raj engaged in a project with SleepLabs Canada focusing on the biomechanics of novel Oral Appliances to treat obstructive sleep apnea, a disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or periods of shallow breathing during sleep that has serious short- and long-term effects on health and wellbeing, including life threatening repercussions.

Raj’s research contributions in the project titled “Innovation, Design, and Development of a Novel Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Prevention Device” was greatly appreciated by his host supervisory Professor Abu Syed Kabir, industrial partner, and other stake holders. He worked alongside Himangi Puri, a B.Des. student from the Institute of Design at JKLU, and peers from Canada and internationally exploring innovative solutions for this globally prevalent health issue.

This experience not only deepened Raj’s understanding of applied research but also provided him with opportunities to gain practical insights into the operational aspects of businesses and the process of translating research into commercially viable products.

Throughout his journey, Raj received invaluable guidance from Prof. Devika Kataria and extensive support from Dr. Jyoti Prakash Naidu, Dean of Research at JKLU.

The Mitacs Globalink Research Award Internship is a highly competitive program that welcomes international undergraduates from around the world. Each year, it involves top-ranked applicants in various research initiatives, spanning disciplines from science, engineering, and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences.
