Beyond Grades: JKLU B.Tech Student Develops App to Evaluate Soft Skills

Indrajit Roy (IJ Roy), a B.Tech student at JKLU, has developed an innovative application named “Beyond Grades” to help companies evaluate a candidate’s soft skills such as communication and time management.

Indrajit developed the app as part of his database management system (DBMS) project.

“The main idea was sparked when our faculty member encouraged us to ‘solve a JKLU problem.’ Many opted for projects like Attendance Management Systems, but I felt those areas had already been addressed,” explains Indrajit.

Indrajit identified a significant gap in the recruitment process: while companies can easily assess a candidate’s CGPA and coding skills, evaluating soft skills during brief interviews proves challenging.

To bridge this gap, Indrajit designed an app where peers and teammates from college events could provide feedback. This peer-based review system is aimed at offering a more accurate representation of a student’s actual skills, presenting several advantages:

•Companies gain a clearer understanding of a candidate’s soft skills.

•Users can discern which skills they need to improve during their college years.

•Increased participation in college events, spurred by visibility on a leaderboard.

“The best evaluators of these skills are those who have collaborated with the candidates across various college events. They have a firsthand view of someone’s behavior, their punctuality, and leadership qualities,” Indrajit notes.

Currently, “Beyond Grades” is in its beta phase and has been tested by select users at JKLU for feedback.

Throughout the app development process, Indrajit received invaluable guidance from several faculty members at JKLU including Dr. S. Taruna and Prof. Anamika.

“Their mentorship played a vital role in shaping ‘Beyond Grades’ into a meaningful solution,” says Indrajit.
