Biography

Dr. Sangbida Lahiri is awarded a Ph.D. degree from the University of Calcutta, Kolkata. She did her master’s degree in South and Southeast Asian studies at the University of Calcutta. She did honors in history from Presidency College, Calcutta. Her focus of research during her PhD was the history of concepts in colonial Calcutta. Currently her research interest is on public health policies and city history. She is working on brothels in Calcutta. She also served as a researcher in a government project on Calcutta brothels. She did a RUSA 2.0 project at Jadavpur University on bar dancers and migration. Sexuality, migration, and working women in the city—these three are the major focus right now of her writing and research.

She is a bilingual writer/author. She has multiple writings published in her mother tongue, Bengali, as well as a couple of papers in English. She wrote a book on Solidarity in Bangla. This book project was collaborated on with IWM (Vienna).

  • A detailed report on the sex workers’ lives after pandemic in Sonagachi area, Kolkata North, West Bengal, India submitted to the Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, West Bengal and National Human Rights Commission, Government of India in the month of March, 2023. The publication of the report in the government site is pending.

  • A monograph in Bengali, Covidkale Bipannota O Sonhati, a Monograph in Bengali published by Progressive Publisher. Funded by Human Science of Vienna and CRG, Kolkata, in 2022.

  • A paper presented on Barbonita to Sex Workers: A ‘Dirty’ history of commercial sex-life in Kolkata, in Nineth Annual Conference organised by Mahanirvan Calcutta Research group, in collaboration with Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung- South Asia, Institute of Human Science (IWM), Vienna, Canadian Institute of Advanced Research (CIFAR), University of Naples Federico II.
  • A Paper presented in an international conference on Gender, Geopolitics and Forced Migration at Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand on 7th March 2023.
