On June 22, 2009, Kevin Ashton introduced a new term “The Internet of Things” (IOT) which has revolutionized the field of electronics engineering. The IOT is a network of smart devices (Fig. 1) that can communicate through internet with other devices/users at remote locations. The applications may vary from pervasive control, health monitoring systems, industrial process control, smart agriculture, food preservation and storage, home security system, smart grid, smart supply chain and many other applications. Overall, the technology facilitates sophisticated living for mankind. Typical architecture of the IOT network is shown in Fig. 2. The sensors collect data from the surroundings and send it to the internet through gateways, hubs or protocols. Various types of middleware like data distribution service (DDS), Zigbee, RFID, Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) and others are used to transport data from sensors to the internet.
