Introduction to Nanotechnology and Applications of Carbon Nanotubes

What is nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary branch on engineering involving study of materials at a length scale of 1-100 nm. One nanometer is a billionth of nanometer. For reference, a sheet of paper is 100 thousand times thicker than a nm and a human hair is 70 thousand times thicker than a nm. Nanotechnology involves synthesis, imaging, modeling, and manipulating materials at this length scale. The materials properties at this length scale are very different than the bulk scale properties of materials. The difference between bulk properties and nanoscale properties is due to the different nature of physics theories. At nanoscale the quantum effects govern the properties of the materials unlike at the bulk scale where classical mechanics govern the behavior of material properties. Because of this difference, the materials designed using nanotechnology demonstrate unprecedented properties and scientist are taking advantage of nanoscale phenomena to bring useful and innovative applications.

Carbon nanotubes

Carbon nanotubes are one of the most researched nanomaterials because of their excellent mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. It consists of carbon atoms covalently bonded in a cylindrical crystalline lattice. A single wall carbon nanotube consists one cylinder of carbon atoms while multiwall carbon nanotubes have many concentric cylindrical lattices of carbon atoms. Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are much lighter yet many times stronger than steel making them the strongest known material. The Young’s modulus of SWCNTs is in order of 1 TPa, where as carbon fibers have 800 GPa and glass fibers have 70 GPa. CNTs have average breaking strength of 30 GPA whereas carbon fiber about 6 GPa and high strength steel about 3 GPa. Continue reading

To make smart grid a reality in India

As electricity demands are increasing day by day causing unbalance in the present grid system which results in various causes like load shedding, unbalance voltage etc. which ultimately affects the consumers.

Though government has taken series of steps to increase the generation capacity, it has lagged behind electricity demand and in addition to this, almost 25 -30% generated power is lost due to theft and other technical and non-technical factors. The major part of this loss occurred in the distribution sector, which is most daunting sector due to its complexity, interface with public at large with different needs & expectations. These high losses are neutralizing all other efficiency and improvement initiatives, which are the biggest challenges for distribution sector. The need to improve this sector was realized and step had taken to reduce high transmission & distribution (T&D) losses, control the theft / pilferage and rationalize the tariff.

The adaptation of smart grid offers a potential to revolutionize electricity supply system more effectively. Smart grid is a platform that integrates, monitor and operate electrical system in an automated fashion and provides a better use of existing network with basic automation systems followed by its upgradation. In India, challenges for implementation of smart grid are high transmission & distribution (T&D) losses, power theft, inadequate grid infrastructure, low metering efficiency and lack of awareness. Adherence to Ethics & Professional Values in Indian Technical Education

Summary: Ethics and professional values are the most precious for professionals such as Engineers, Doctors, Lawyers, and Tax consultants. Since civilizations, India has been recognized for high ethical, professional and human values. However, after arrival of foreign rulers as well neo-rulers post-independence, there has been sharp decline and degradation in ethical and professional standards among Indian youths. The important reasons for degradation of ethical standards may be attributed to values in the university such as privatization of higher education system, delay in reinforcement of minimum technical education standards, easy access to large pool of information available through internet; values in the community such as excess exposure to social and digital media resources, declining human values among family and youths, limited mentoring support from family, and values in the world community such as over dependence on material wealth. The situation got further compounded as values in the world community got extremely high social recognition, and thus excessive increasing the market demand of professions such as engineers, doctors, managers, and lawyers. This article explores new possibilities and means for high professional values for technical education in India. The author suggests several possibilities to recover lost glory of Indian civilization, and establish once again modern Bharat based on high standards in human values and ethics, simplicity of living, and freedom of professional expression.

The Technical education landscape is changing rapidly due to establishment of large number of private universities and academic institutions in India during last 10-years. Indian higher education system needs massive expansion up to 1500 universities during next 5 years, in order to attain a gross enrolment ratio of 15% of the population, as desired by Government of India. In spite of last 6-decades of sustained efforts, India has just 160 central universities, 320 state universities, 210 private universities, and 12,800 technical institutions. The academic quality of these universities and institutions varies due to poor compliance of academic standards as laid down by regulatory agencies. Just one-third of universities and one-fifth of technical institutions in India have been accredited either by National Academic and Accreditation Council (NAAC) or National Board of Accreditation (NBA).
