India, which largely depend on fossil fuels for electrical energy generation, now looking towards the non-fossil fuels. Reasons are many like limited amount of fossil fuels; to take steps to reduce carbon footprints; gradually reducing cost of renewable energy generation; nearly zero cost of fuel used in renewable energy plants; comparatively low operating cost of these plants; etc.

Also coastal reason of many states and desert reason of some states observes a continuous wind flow which is very suitable for wind energy generation. Apart from the major renewable energy sources (RES) like wind, solar and bagasse other renewable energy sources such as geothermal, tidal, biomass, generation from waste etc. has already been explored although amount of energy production by them is considerably less in comparison to major renewable energy sources. For the last fiscal year 2016-17, energy generation by RES were 7% only of the total electrical energy generation. Internet of Things(IoT): The revolution for Electronics Engineers

On June 22, 2009, Kevin Ashton introduced a new term “The Internet of Things” (IOT) which has revolutionized the field of electronics engineering. The IOT is a network of smart devices (Fig. 1) that can communicate through internet with other devices/users at remote locations. The applications may vary from pervasive control, health monitoring systems, industrial process control, smart agriculture, food preservation and storage, home security system, smart grid, smart supply chain and many other applications. Overall, the technology facilitates sophisticated living for mankind.  Typical architecture of the IOT network is shown in Fig. 2. The sensors collect data from the surroundings and send it to the internet through gateways, hubs or protocols. Various types of middleware like data distribution service (DDS), Zigbee, RFID, Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) and others are used to transport data from sensors to the internet. The data is processed using cloud/fog computing. The processed data may be used at remote for generating alarms or controlling actuators for necessary actions. Continue reading
